EDITOR INTERVIEW

Sarah E., 3/7/2006, 5:10:59 PM

This year, my advisor decided to let the class decide who gets to be editor in chief. Each candidate has to make a presentation to the class. The only problem is that my opponents happen to be two of my closest friends. We were all uneasy about this, and even if there are co-editors, one of us will not be able to get the position we want. How do I make a speech that makes me look good without making my opponents look bad. I thought about talking about my plans for next year, but what else can I do?

Sarah,

Hello my name is Alex LaCasse, and I am the Executive Editor for Montlake Terrace High School's student newspaper, The Hawkeye.

Personally, I find it odd that your teacher would be making you do this. In our organization, we have an executive council of 4 people. Included in this special group is our news editor, business manager, graphics editor, and editorial editor. This group meets every Monday and is the 'elite' (you could say) staff members of the newspaper. When selecting a new Executive Editor this group makes the final decision. We discuss, argue, and finally vote on a future Editor. If these people truly are the best, and have the best interest in mind for the paper they will make the best decision. Additionally, the only people eligible for the editor position are those in the executive council.

Please e-mail me at LaCasseAl@yahoo.com, and we can talk more about this. It could be that you and your friends talk personally and decide on an executive editor. Let me know what you think by e-mailing me.

Good Luck.

Alex
