copyright law - gov't work

herb, 2/10/2006, 8:31:41 PM

I was wondering if say, you went on a federal government site (*.gov) and found some pictures you wanted to use in a publication. Is it fine to simply save the picture to your computer as print it without mentioning its source legally?

It is always the rule that anything, printed or photographed, found on the internet is considered copyrighted. If the site has a contact, send them an e-mail or call/write to ask for formal permission to use their image in your publication. You will have to give credit to the source.

I advise you to go to this site, http://www.splc.org/legalresearch.asp?maincat=6 where you can read about specific circumstances relating to copyright issues -- it's the site of the Student Press Law Center.

Good luck and congratulations for asking! Most wouldn't and the consequences can be great.
