Facebook epidemic

Sarah E., 1/16/2006, 2:15:55 PM

My school, like many others has many students who partake in facebook and similair sites. At first, only students who partook of this site on school computers were disciplined, as per school rules. Then, a parent found out about an inappropriate group saying something about her son. She reported it to the school, and the students in that group were told to get out or be punished. Now, teachers are accessing facebook at home and threatening to remve students from extracurricular activities even though those students do not join inappropriate groups. Our paper is trying to write a story, much to our principal's dismay, on the topic. What has happened at your school regarding facebook, and how/why do you think the paper should be allowed to cover the topic? thanks

A lot of people use Myspace, it's blocked from school computer but the school doesn't monitor students using it at home during their free time.

yeah i think it's totally pointless to block myspace at school. i mean sure there are some kids who get offtask and can't discipline themselves not to get on during the day, but for the rest of us, it's not cool that myspace is blocked. let's say you finish a math test way before the hour is over. well you can ask the teacher to go out on the computer, but now that myspace is blocked, all i CAN do is check my grades. i think blocking it is extremely worthless and just a way for school districts to show they have power over us students.

they dont have controll of our personal lives..only if it affects what happens in school.

My school has blocked myspace, fortunately, we have some pretty brainy kids at our school who have figured out ways around it. But the school doesn't monitor us using myspace at home and if that's happening to you, I'm pretty sure that it's illegal. Even so, it's pointless to block myspace... kids are going to find ways around the rules no matter how you propose them. Just let us have our FUN!!! We're only in school for a little while.

Class of '06

Dez, 3/28/2006, 8:38:52 AM
Just recently my high school blocked facebook. I learned about it today as i was logging in at school during my philosophy class. Almost everybody in my class logs into facebook, even when we have other things we have to do. Its true we get off task, but most people check their facebook and then respond to a couple of things and then get off and go to work. But now that it is blocked we surf the internet looking for other sites or ways to get passed the block-aid. Truefully, its not the best way to stop students from going on facebook. And thou some people do say mean things, it dosnt happen that offen and is easily stoped.

(check out www.schoolbypass.com if you're blocked at school.)

we've been trying to run a story on the repercussions of putting your information out there on the internet - not a "you shouldn't do this" story, but an informative news story about it. also, we ran an editorial on how adviseable it is to put that information out there.

there are many other angles you can take on this, though.
