Here are some
for food--find the best salads in town, the best tacos, the best burger, best ice cream sundae, etc--feature one 'food' a month and have several critics give A,B,Cs to each selection and then list the "what we liked" and what we would improve about each one--you could do this in chart format.
Have face offs for the opinion page. Do some funny ones such as he said, she said about topics such as botox or plastic surgery to how much to spend on prom.
for features, dig out the dirt on the school--what's lurking in the basement? the attic? go check it out and take pictures. Any secret closets? Ask the custodians to give you the real tour of the building.
Look at family history for sports. Any players whose folks also played the same or different sports? Look up the record holders--who are they? Any of them current or former coaches or teachers? administrators?
Do a survey on the teachers and administrators and see how many flunked a class and if so, which ones and why? what encouraged them to continue?
What about a celebrity look-alike spread? Any students and/staff look like famous people?
Who drives what car? Check out the parking lot and match the faces to the car.
Look at magazines to see what subjects they are featuring.

What I've always found make the best stories is writing about things you thought you weren't supposed to write about. Go find the pregnant cheerleader and interview her. Go out behind the dumpsters and interview the smokers. Just start finding people and tell their individual stories - in an individual way. Don't use the same old quote/transition style; tell the stories as you would a fictionalized account, with imagery and detail and just a few quotes to hold it together. Make it one giant anecdotal lead. People read stories like that.
As for entertainment, do some joke reviews on thinks like parks and socks and glue. Review your school's bathrooms - find the cleanest in the building. Make a little fact box listing the entire contents of the principal's top desk drawer. Just do fun stuff for awhile.
The news section is always harder, but I'd recommend going to the City Council and being more a community news section than a school news section.

Cover local connections/reactions to national events. This is especially effective if these events are likely to affect students in general or your students specifically.

I am the editor of our school newspaper and a lot of times we have a BLAH newspaper too....i think articles about upcoming events and school news are always great ((as long as when the newspaper comes out, they will not be old))...u just need articles that the readers will be interested in reading....if you are not interested in it, the reader will not be either.

At our paper we did a story around the time of a formal dance. We took a couple that were going together and took them shopping at the local Value-Village for cheap formal wear. It was a major hit. Use it sometime. It was a fun story to write.

Instead of writing an article based entirely on your school, try thinking abroad. Find issues that are happening in the world today, society, and among young people. For example, anorexia, drug problems, drinking, things that students can relate to and be interested in but not necessarily about your school. It gets old when everyone still talks about prom, the next dance, sports..talk about an issue that effects everyone.

I a staff writer for a newspaper. You can always go to any club meetings or even faculty meetings. People are always willing to talk. Remember, being a writer doesn't mean that you have to have juicy info, but that it is quality.
Good Luck...

Try interviewing teachers and ask them about what they were like in HighSchool.
