PageMaker Tutorial?

MHS Pitchfork, 10/14/2005, 7:38:07 AM

We use PageMaker 7.0 to layout our newspaper, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a built-in or stand-alone tutorial that inexperienced students could use to gain experience.

I need to get underclassman ready for next year, and short of giving them old stories and a blank layout, I don't know how to do it.

Thanks.

take a previous layout from your paper, give them all the materials they need in a folder and have them try. give them a list of short cuts, explain the tools and give them free reign. criticize how they do thigns.

They could learn it by doing it next year...? That's the way it works for us with InDesign.

We also use Pagemaker for our school newspaper. What we use is a 8.5"x14" layout in which we have four pages per legal sheet. We usually run three or four legal sheets giving us 12 or 16 pages and we staple it in the middle. It works out very nicely. I can send you a blank copy of the layouts with all the guidelines if you like. email to sharkattack@myway.com

Classroom in a Book is the way to go for all Adobe products. You can buy used ones or new through Amazon. Just search for Classroom in a Book Indesign

or photoshop or whatever. Caution: don't buy a used one if it doesn't come with the CD--you won't have the materials needed to complete the lessons.

If you "Google" Adobe Pagemaker Tutorials, there are literally dozens online. I often use these with my students at our summer bootcamp to get them back in the groove. Don't worry if they are 6.0 or 6.5 instead of 7.0 - they work just fine.

The other thing I do is have a really long story copied and saved and several photos, and then teach them placing text and pictures, autoflow and word wrap and all that nifty stuff, with a list of shortcuts in front of them (easily created from the Help menus in Pagemaker).

Hope that helps!

The best way to learn PageMaker is to use it. You can use all the books, tutorials, etc that you want, but the students won't truly know what they are doing without just sitting down and trying things. Just tell them to save their work often, so if they try an unfamiliar command and it messes up their layout, they can just Revert.
