Downloading Photos from Photoshop in InDesign

For the school newspaper we need to download photos from Photoshop into InDesign. Is there an easy way of doing this?

What you want to do, I think, is not download, but place your photos into InDesign. To do this, you must either a) find where your photos are stored on your hard drive, using the Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer, and drag them onto the InDesign page where you want them to be, or b) Use the File-->Place command in InDesign and navigate your hard drive to find the pictures you want that way.

Once you have the pictures in InDesign, you can go directly to Photoshop by right-clicking on the images and choosing Graphics-->Edit Original. When you return to InDesign, the placed images should reflect the changes you made in Photoshop, if you saved them.

You have another option.
Open the image files in photoshop, select all (Ctrl+ A) and copy (Ctrl + C) the image.
Then go to InDesign, and paste the image (Ctrl + V).

The method I explained is actually different in puropose than Marc's. With my method, InDesign keeps one static copy of the image in the .INDD file. Marc's method tells InDesign "Let me insert a paceholder for the image that is located on my harddrive". If you change the image file, it will change in InDesign.

Where do you want to use one over the other?

My method (cut/paste) is good for static images- Flags, Masthead backgrounds, etc. that never change issue to issue. The cut/paste method removes the tie to the image file so that if you lose the file, it wont mess up your InDesign file.

Marc's method is good for images that are just for this issue, and are subject to change. That way you can place the image once, and then edit it all you like without having to go back and forth between photoshop and indesign.

Hi, my newspaper uses Adobe Photoshop and our trouble relates to photos.

When you place photos, what file type do you save them in? Is it EPS? When we do this the photo doesn't display correctly.

What's your recommended file type for the best quality photo?

The tif format is preferred and necessary for color separation.
