I need an editorial paper idea about high school stuff

Greg, 9/23/2005, 10:47:42 AM

I have a paper that i must write for a journalist class in high school. My teacher said to write about whatever floats my boat, help me find something that can help me float it.

As the EIC of my school paper, I write an editorial column for every monthly issue. I find the best editorials that are easiest to write are those about topics I care about. That's where you should start. What are you unhappy with? What do you appreciate? No one can tell you what matters to you - it's up to you to form your own opinions.

It depends on what type of story you are to write--news? opinion? feature? sports? Do you have to interview?

For news, ask other students, the principal and clubs for ideas. Attend a school board meeting and see if anything is going on there. We are closing schools. This comes up at the board meetings and is very controversial. This topic would also make for a great opinion/editorial piece. For news, be sure to get more than one source--three or more is best and make sure to interview the main players--for a club, the club adviser, the president and at least one member. For sports, one of the coaches, the opposing team members/coach if possible, team members, the captain and anyone who made or broke the game.

For feature stories, look at what is going on in magazines--meth addictions, anorexia, the effects on students when their parents are sent to Iraq, etc. You could do a fun piece on the best salads in town or what the latest fashions are and where to get them.

Good luck

Thank you for telling at least some part of how to do it. You also put it where everyone could understand you as well. Once again thanks.
