Let's see...

helping the community

guess the student by looking at the parents

students who have jobs

students with tatoos/piercings

tv vs. the internet: which is more popular?

look back at the classes of 96, 85, 76...

students who have a connection to Iraq and/or New Orleans

student pet peeves

students and their cars

Good luck!

You should have mentioned your "awesome theme." Also, don't imagine your best ideas are behind you. Creativity, like the Creator, is infinite! Here are a few ideas:

Differences in the fans of different school sports

Most/ least common names in school; confusions over identical names

Stop 25 students in hall; catalogue contents of their pockets; interview; take pictures

"Garage" bands

Local hang outs

Teacher space - which classrooms distinctive?

Controversial - interview on question: Why are guys' sports so much better supported (fan-wise) than girls' sports?

Famous people I've known/met

Spoof superlatives (using underclassmen) with "Most Likely to be on. . . Survivor, Jeopardy, Extreme Home Makeover," etc.

Behind the scenes (really in-depth look) at a Student Government-sponsored event.

Backpacks and chiropractors (doctor's scale in hall to get average weight; heaviest backpack, etc.)

Kids with regular volunteer gigs

compare/contrast "what kids want to be when they grow up" at age 5 and now

try something like "cute ways people have been asked to winter formal or prom or someother major dance"

These are GREAT! I love some of the suggestions offered so far.

We have used...

Extreme Sports - snow-boarding, BMX, skateboarding, quads, paintball, sufing, etc.

It's Done For Fun - highlights students that take part in activities outside of school. ex. dancing, horseback riding, musical instruments, local bands.

Sibling Wishes - messages and advice from upperclassmen to freshman siblings.

Why don't you ask the students who usually never get interviewed for the school paper/ annual. I know plenty of kids at my school who don't. That's why i'm glad i got on the paper... but just choose original themes, not ones you've seen on tv because some are just too weird to handle. Why don't you just ask around. seems simple.
