Judge's comments on Design of the Year entries:
The winners of the Adobe-sponsored Associated Collegiate Press 2009 Design of the Year contest demonstrated excellence in both creative and technical aspects. Overall, the designs were contemporary and appealing, and demonstrated effective use of photos, typography, color and graphics.
- Photography was a strong point in the entries. Photos with action/emotion or that demonstrated creative design technique contributed well to the overall design. The best images assisted in telling the story, and demonstrated technical proficiency and good composition.
- Illustrations were eye-catching and complementary. The infographics presented information in an attractive and easy to read design, and the source of the information was apparent/clearly indicated.
- Entries that showed attention to detail, technical expertise, and adhered to the basic design principles scored well.
- Although this contest is primarily a design contest, it is notable that the best entries localized their coverage and spoke directly to their student body audience.
- There were many excellent entries in this year’s contest, representing sophisticated design skills, and technical proficiency. We were impressed with the creativity and overall excellent quality of the designs.
