Incorporating your newspaper

Tzvi, 7/2/2003, 4:43:58 PM

I am the editor-in-chief of a weekly student newspaper at a small religious college of about 1500 students. There has been some talk among our business staff about incorporating our newspaper and/or applying for non-for-profit status. Have any of you done either of these? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of doing so? And how do you actually go about applying for not-for-profit status or incorporating the newspaper?

Generally, do you think it's a worthwhile investment in time and energy?

Thanks for your help!

Are you breaking away from funding from your college?

Your school's business office/director of finance should be able to steer you in the right direction in terms of filing with the IRS to become a
a 501(c)3 organization...not-for-profit. But you probably already have that status through your school. So, unless you want to break away and become truly independent then it may be a waste of time to go through the process. My advice would be keep the business side of the newspaper as simple as possible especially at a school of your size. Also, operating a corporation and/or not-for-profit organization isn't something that just anybody can do and future classes might not be willing to take up the challenge or hassle, especially at a school of your size (but then again you might have a stellar business program or something what would keep your business office staff with capable bodies).
