Paying section editors

Charles McKenzie, 4/6/2006, 4:03:22 PM

I've been asked to benchmark other student newspapers to see what they are paying their section editors, if anything. When I took over as adviser of the student newspaper, I was surprised to find our editor receives only $6,000 per year, and our assistant editor makes about half of that. Other than the editor and assistant editor, only the ad manager gets paid (10 percent). We are able to keep some of our ad revenue, but we cannot use it to pay our students.

As our newspaper goes online and starts doing a mini webcast of the top stories, one publication becomes three. The responsibilites grow, etc. Therefore, the top editors should get paid more and the section editors should be paid something, even if it's only in gift certificates.

I'm interested in what all campus newspapers do, but for comparison purposes, the University of Tampa is a medium-sized private university of 5,000 students, and boy are we growing. You can also respond to charles.mckenzie@ut.edu

Thanks so much. What a wonderful tool ACP's forum has been!

Hi,
I advise at a community college in Washington State (about 8,000 students). The paper has nine paid spots. Eight receive $11.11 an hour for a 10-hour week -- or $3,333 a year. One (the distributor) receives $11.11 an hour for a 3-hour week -- or $990 a year. The paper comes out every other week. Hope that helps!

Thank you, Patti! Anyone else?
