Going Independent

Michelle, 2/18/2006, 11:24:43 AM

I just left my budget council with the student association at my school. While I really like the SA people on a personal level, I'm sick of having to deal with them as an organization. They want free ads and coverage for everything.

Though it's been an idea I've had for years, I want to know: what does it take for college newspapers to break away from SA? Taxes, funding, equipment... everything.

My biggest problems are that our money doesn't roll over from year to year and that the equipment we buy through SA is theirs. Would we be able to acquire it for ourselves if we broke off? So many questions...

Michelle - It depends on how willing and eager your school would be for you to leave. Many major universities see the incorporation of a college newspaper as a means of removing legal liability from the university and shifting it to a corporate board.

Has the school ever suggested you go independent? I know at least 1 school where the university pays the student media corporation to provide "student media services" to the university... hope that helps. let me know if you want any further information.

My paper is independant of the Student Goverment, but under a "University Media Board" that oversees our funding in a simular manner. It's better, in that we get more funding and deal with less beaucracy. But we've also have a lot of problems with the UMB trying to influence content, and to this day they are responsible for hiring and overseeing my own position.

That's a tough situation. At our university we have a very respectable line between the SGA and our Student Media publications. They control our funding, but they rarely ever try to find special favors in our policies.

I believe UPenn has an independent daily that functions mostly off their advertising revenue. You may want to contact their editor in order to get more information.
