Enterprise Stories

Joey, The Daily Toreador at Texas Tech, 10/30/2005, 6:17:21 PM

My staff and I are trying to come up with some enterprise stories revelant to students, faculty and staff on campus. We've got a couple of ideas, but I wanted to know if anybody else had some that they've worked on.

Can you tell me what you mean by "enterprise" stories?

Go out and find a problem at your campus/community and then find out what student reaction is to the problem and what the administrators responsible for it are trying to do to fix it, if they are trying anything at all.

I think "enterprise" stories will differ from paper to paper, being that a good number of enterprise stories have to do with a local issue.

I also think, though, a generic enterprise story that can be done (and one that I have done) is finding consistent lapses in security at different points on campus. Find out students who were directly affected by these lapses (did someone gain entrance to campus that then went on to harass the student source) and then find out what your security dept. has done to ensure the breach does not happen again and how they responded to the reported breach.

An "enterprise" story I'm working on right now is about the fact that all recreational places (pubs, bowling alley, billiards rooms, taverns, etc.) have been shut down in the past 10 years or so. There is nothing to do on campus nowadays on the weekends, thus driving up the alcoholism and pushing down the freshman retention rate. Our college is in a small town in Upstate New York. Not that there's much, but after about 8 p.m. everything in town is shut down except for bars which thusly line the streets with drunken college students.

Good luck with your ideas!
