National Advertising

Bill Welch, 10/5/2005, 11:12:16 AM

I am looking for a national agency that is reliable and at least moderately efficient.
We have repeatedly been ripped off by 360 Youth. I am at the point where I want to refuse ads from them.
Does anyone have a national rep with a positive experience?
Please e-mail me at wwelch@mercyhurst.edu

Bill,

That is really interesting because we've had nothing but great relations with 360 Youth. Most likely it is your ad rep with that advertiser. Call 360 and ask for a different rep.

Or, you're ticked because it takes sooo long to get your money. 360 has to wait for you to send the invoice and 3 copies of the paper. Then it goes through a process and then is sent to the advertiser (actually client) and then they have to process it. We have NEVER recieved a payment from 360 within 3 months of payment.
Be patient, and keep calling.

Try Campus Media Group, they are pretty good!

Now hang on... as far as 360 Youth, I was so distrustful of them that I required all ads to be prepaid. It worked. Waiting 3 months for payment isn't a luxury I extend even to our local mom-and-pop advertisers.

I'm sorry but a 3-month wait in the advertising industry is INSANE. I work for a smaller agency and the mantra that we've always been told is that you pay the bills when they come.

Start charging them 1.5 percent a month after the first month. That will get them paying.

Hello, I am a reporter from Minnesota. Our town has great advertising but we want to find a national market. WHo can we go to and ask for if they want to post ads. Please help I really need it. Any suggestions please reply.

We have had mixed relations with 360 Youth. For some reason unknown to us, they manage to lose the majority of the tear sheets we submit after ad publication. It is really frustrating, and I wouldn't mind looking elsewhere for national advertising.

We had the exact same thing--we sent the tear sheets and they kept saying they did not receive them. We would resend and still have to call to check on our money. In some cases they again said they did not receive all of the required tear sheets. What a hassle and a waste of time and effort plus the money sometimes takes up to a year to track down after spending money on postage resending tear sheets.

Unfortunately, all of the negatives about 360 Youth are very typical of any national ad firm. There's just too much red tape for the check to be sent sooner than 3-6 months.

However, because it can be expected of these types of businesses you should certainly protect yourself by doing the pre-paid thing. The rep. may try to whine about it, but if you're firm in your demand, they'll pay it to you prior to publication.

I would also add that you should look into your national rep. because most all of the people I've talked to at 360 are very helpful, and I deal with them a lot, and usually it's not the same rep. So, it could be a communication problem on your end. Always look there before casting stones...I've learned it's the least embarrassing way to go.

Good luck finding another agency that deals on the scale of 360...the only other one I know is Campus Media Group, but they don't spend half the amount of money with us.

Sorry for your hard time. I hope everything works out better in the upcoming semester.

Again, I will emphasize that waiting three months for payment is completely unprofessional. My advice, if you don't go with pre-payment requirements, dedicate some time to collecting those bills more often. And make sure you're sending tearsheets to the right place; 360 Youth has more than one address. Then, call and confirm they have received it about three or four days later. Communication is key in this world!

Wow! I thought I was the only one who was experiencing "lost" tear sheets.

Roy Waggoner, 2/13/2006, 7:34:43 PM
I also have experienced the problem of "lost" tearsheets.

I never had a problem until last semester. Before then, 360 Youth always paid us within two-three months. The only problem before was the utter inability of 360 Youth to get our address correct. They always sent payment to the TOWN newspaper instead of us, but thankfully the town newspaper was nice enough to inform us. It was not until we got onto the PAT system after about 4 months of trying and failing that finally we got the problem fixed.

With regards to tearsheets, three times last semester I was given a notice that tearsheets were not received. I sent them every time, and one of the ads we printed was cancelled because they could not "find" the tearsheets.

Eventually, I resent the others directly to the ad agent and that seemed to get things moving along.

But, I am more hesitent to work with 360 Youth in the future.

Be careful with 360.

We've had a lot of trouble with 360, too, as far as very late payments and lost tearsheets. Will have to look into the prepaid thing.

Has anyone worked with the National Outdoor Media Network (www.nationaloutdoor.com)? I'm considering getting a few bins through them, but want to check for horror stories before I do.

We have worked this semester with Zim Squared and they have been great to work with! They took the time to get to know our paper which is something rare with national advertisers these days. They also have sent us numerous full page ads and pay within 30 days. I have zero complaints!

Give them a call, they are great to work with!

In my days as a collegiate journalist, our paper routinely dealt with Cass Communications in Chicago, and American Passage in Washington State (Spokane, I believe). My experience with them was positive, so see if they can help you.

Rob V., 3/28/2006, 1:42:48 PM
Mr. Smith:
How long ago was this? I believe Cass was enveloped by the Alloy Group, which includes 360 Youth. This may have been just a few years ago, as I recall. Now that you mention it, I seem to remember having less problems with Cass than I do with 360 Youth... wonder what brought about that change?
