Taking over the yearbook

Michelle, The Oswegonian, 8/30/2005, 9:09:58 PM

Our college's yearbook has been non-existant since I was a freshman. Each year there's rumors that there will be one. In fact, they even took pictures and hired a staff last year but still no yearbook.

I was thinking instead of producing your average yearbook our newspaper, with the help of our student government's money, could throw together a year in review magazine. It would be a compilation issue of the things that happened this year and we would sell it for a few bucks. We'd get together with the alumni office, PR office, and probably hire a few more staffers.

I just wanted some input on the idea and I was wondering if anyone had any experince with putting together any kind of publication like this.

We did this at LSU a few years ago. Feel free to e-mail me directly with specific questions: pparish@lsu.edu.

At that time, a number of schools were substituting magazines for defunct yearbooks. I think a few schools still are doing that, but I don't know how many. Magazines lack the permanency of a bound volume, but are cheaper and more immediate.
