When Mutiny's Afoot

Alba, 8/17/2005, 10:27:44 PM

I used to be the EIC of a pretty prosperous campus paper but circumstance forced my hand and I stepped down to a lower position once my term ended, recommending my second-in-command. This, apparently, was a bad idea. The new editor makes up excuses to not do work, leaves hundreds of emails to go through, and has dragged the staff left and right - changing meetings and not giving out assignments. I knew she's had problems being responsible, but I never imagined this. Now the semester is starting and we're very much screwed. The rest of the eboard is absolutely livid and turning to their old EIC to rectify the situation. We've tried speaking to her, to no avail. Now the staff is in disarray and it's as if they want me to go over her head. How does a section editor deal with a leader that just won't lead?

On our campus we would simply talk to the Assistant Director of Student Media or the Director of Student Activities in order to start a process of removal. The Student Media Committee would then take that process further since they would hire and fire the student leaders. I don't know what process is involved to remove your leaders, but if you have a leader who won't lead and the staff is in disarray then removal would be the best option. You can't necessarily teach good leaders and the paper must go on.

Does your publication/club abide by any type of constitution? If so, there should be a section about how membership levels are attained and how they can be taken away from individuals.

Also, just for reference, a newspaper's executive board, or editorial board as a whole, should have the power via majority vote to remove any editor from his/her position -- and that includes the editor in chief.
