Crediting press releases

Chris, 8/1/2005, 1:34:08 PM

How do you do it?

Do any of you use press releases from your university's office of public relations. Do any of your advisers ever submit anything for your papers?

If so, what kind of byline do you give them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Press releases don't get printed in our newspaper.

If it's anything newsworthy, a reporter is assigned and contact is made with the subjects of the PR.

If anything, quotes and informated from the PR are cited in the article as, for example, "information provided in a statement by the university."

Normally, our paper avoids directly quoting from press releases, as it's better to obviously call the source and get a live quote from him or her.

But, if we're on deadline and it's our last option, we normally say "X said in a written statement."

Hope this helps,

What we do is take the press releases and re-word them, shorten them, combine them-- something of that nature-- and make the byline a Staff Report. We don't publish press releases as they come because most of the time they don't fit newspaper style no matter how well it may be written.

And like Anthony said, if the event or announcement is relevant, we send a reporter out to cover it.

We always customize the press releases by sending a reporter to cover the event, or at a minimum calling the PR contact. Most we don't even print, and when we do we'll often run it in our briefs section without byline.
