Open Records/Open Meetings Issues

I am a reporter with the SPLC Report, the magazine of the Student Press Law Center.

I am working on a story about the everyday open records/open meetings problems student reporters face.

If you have faced repeated or even isolated cases of officials at your university not following your state's FOI/open records/open meetings laws, I would like to hear from you.

We've had trouble getting campus police records. When we do, it seems they are underreporting incidents. We are trying a warm and fuzzy approach to work with our new contact. I have nothing specific that would help with your story, but wanted to relay our general experience. FOIA has been used as a polite threat by us, and we've filed a request in the past to get what we needed. Lets see if this year is any better. College crime stats will NEVER be realistic.
