Insert problems

Theresa Poulson, 10/11/2004, 5:57:00 PM

The Daily Targum is a Tabloid paper. At the beginning of this semester, we changed the size of our entertainment section to a smaller, more square size that is inserted into our paper once a week.

While the entertainment insert looks great, it falls out when people pick up the paper and clutters up the bins. We're afraid no one is reading it. Advertisers are starting to request that their ads not be in the entertainment section because they are afraid not as many people read it.

In our last marketing survey, our readers demanded more entertainment news and reviews, so I don't think it's a matter of people lacking interest in the content.

Please help!

We're planning to promote the section at on-campus entertainment events, but other suggestions are welcome.

Our paper, Viewpoints, recently had an idea to sort of seperate the entertainment section from the rest of the paper. It does involve a tricky working of the page count though. We are going to keep all of the pages in the tabloid size, but work the page count in a certain way that anyone can just take the entertainment section out of the paper. All we really have to make sure is that the start of the Entertainment section has a clearly defined cover and last page. Normally we do a 24-28 page paper, so it looks like we would have to do an 8 page entertainment section to make it work. This should take care of the problem of the section falling out of the paper.
