Font Management Woes

Stephen Yeargin, Editor of The Pacer, 10/11/2004, 1:51:59 AM

We are using Extensis Suitcase to manage our newsroom fonts (consisting of Frankin Gothic, Palatino Linotype, and a few others for novelty usage) yet we cannot seem to InDesign CS to load them properly.

We continually get "missing" font error messages, even though Suitcase says that they were properly loaded.

For the next obvious question, we're too poor to have Macs. Anyone have suggestions?

Though I am a HS newspaper editor in chief, I have seen your problem before. My first question is "Are you sure that the fonts are in the right folder?" InDesign has its own folder for fonts, seperate from Windows folder and seperate from wherever Mac keeps its system fonts (I don't use Mac other than briefly in school).

InDesign will work on both Mac and Windows. If you have the Mac version and PC's, just mail it back to Adobe and ask them to swap it for a Windows version. Personally, I prefer working on Windows with InDesign because it renders fonts faster when you preview text (As you scroll through fonts on a mac, it takes a second or two to render each. Windows is much faster), and tends to crash less.

As an avid Adobe user, I find the Adobe programs play best with others of their own kind. Therefore, I strongly suggest Adobe Type Manager Deluxe. (See it online: http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?navAction=jump&id=catATM ) Using third party programs can cause you more grief than you need. I find that Type Manager and InDesign work together seamlessly on Windows and have yet to yield more than an error or two due to human stupidity.

Hope that helps,

I would be very interested to talk to editors of college papers!
