Misbehavior on the part of college advisors

Kelly Bedar, 10/5/2004, 10:53:42 PM

I do not want to name the institution but right now there is a controversial issue going on . There was a payroll issue and I was fired for trying to solve the issue regarding my paycheck. The advisor got angryr with me and told me things like he was disappointed in me as a journalist and in the real world when you break the chain of command, people screw with your paychecks. I'm currently in talks with administration right now. He also refused to turn in my paperwork to hire me. I know this because when he (wrongly) banned me from the newsroom, he told me "remember you were never hired". He then told me first that I filled out the paperwork too late and then told me I never turned in the paperwork--but I have proof that I do. Has anyone else out there ever had to deal with an underhanded college newspaper advisor? If so how did you deal with it? Advice is greatly appreciated. He has intimidated people other people on staff and caused them to leave. He retaliated against me because I refused to stand for his intimidation of me.

In the real world, people who screw with rightfully earned paychecks eventually end up in big trouble. You are on the right track by talking to the administration. You may even have a labor grievance. If it isn't resolved, I would contact the Student press law center.

KM--thank you very much for your advice. I did contact the labor department and they told me what to do so I'll follow through with that and thank you for suggesting that I contact the SPLC.

Have a great day!
